Mary Elizabeth Winstead: Your Go-To Horror Gal.
She may be receiving raves for her dramatic turn as an alcoholic in "Smashed," but the star of "The Thing" won't be giving up horror any time soon as she's signed on for a lead role in "The Darkness," according to Screen Daily.
"The Darkness" is loosely based on Henry James' influential horror novel, "The Turn of the Screw," following a young American student (Winstead) working for a charismatic tutor in an English manor house who becomes convinced that she and the children in her charge are being haunted.
"The Darkness" marks director Daniel Stamm's follow-up to his severely underrated found-footage horror pic, "The Last Exorcism," which managed to make a lot of money even though everyone seemed to hate it (except for us -- and maybe you, too?).
Mary Elizabeth Winstead is, of course, no stranger to the horror genre, having appeared in "The Ring Two," "Final Destination 3," Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof" and, of course, last year's "The Thing." She'll also be appearing later this year as Mary Todd Lincoln in "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" (which is not to be confused with Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," in which Sally Field plays Mary Lincoln).
Winstead also generated a lot of buzz at the Sundance Film Festival last month for her no-holds-barred performance in "Smashed," a drama about two married alcoholics whose relationship is put to the test when the wife decides to get sober.
Still, whatever roles she takes and wherever her career goes, she'll always be Ramona Flowers to us. (Oh, and Lucy McClane, too.)
"The Darkness" will commence with production in Europe this summer.
