The first photos from the set of the hotly anticipated sci-fi horror prequel "The Thing" hit the internet yesterday and all we can say is, dear god, what is that thing?!

Or rather, where is that thing -- unfortunately, there aren't any actual photos of the titular creature itself. But the set visit from the folks over at Collider did reveal a few shots of interest to horror buffs, perhaps none more than the image of "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World's" breakout star Mary Elizabeth Winstead kicking some serious alien ass with the help of a ginormous flame thrower. Now where was that when those evil exes came a-calling?

Also of interest to fans of John Carpenter's 1982 classic are the sets, which have been carefully designed to blend in with the original frosty landscape; we're particularly jazzed about a giant ice cave, if only because we're hoping to catch a glimpse of Luke Skywalker hanging upside down from the ceiling somewhere in the finished film.

As for the thing itself, well, the author does provide a description of a fierce alien that "looked a bit like an insect mixed with a sort of Predator head," but it turns out this is just some random alien and not the actual "thing" itself. For now, then, you'll just have to use your imagination to fill in the blanks.

Don't worry, though, we're sure you'll be getting more teases soon enough: "The Thing" is currently slated for release on April 29, 2011.
